"That's it?": Project host's hopes after dismay at Voice result

The Project host Rachel Corbett has shared her disappointment over the quick defeat of the Voice referendum, saying she is still "really hopeful" that Australians are on the right path to reconciliation.

Labor's proposed Voice to Parliament referendum was widely voted against in Saturday's vote, with only a single state or territory – the ACT – voting for constitutional change.

The defeat sparked a wave of grief and upset from pubic figures who were hopeful the Voice would pass, despite the polls predicting the defeat.

On Sunday night, Corbett told her fellow panellists that she was having difficulty coming to terms with the fact it was over in an instant.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Project (@theprojecttv)

“I could not believe how quickly it was decided. That’s it, we voted no. I am just really hopeful that the majority of people voted no for a specific thing,” she said.

“That they weren’t comfortable with this specific version of the Voice being enshrined, and not because they don't want to improve the lives of Indigenous people.”

Corbett feared Aboriginal Australians might take away from the vote that they’re not cared about, and that other Australians don’t “want to do something” to close to gap between white Australians and First Nations people.

“I‘m really hopeful that if this is not the solution, that we then find something else. Not that people were saying, we don’t want to help you.” Ms Corbett said.

Co-host Hamish McDonald said it was now the job of the country’s leaders to find the “common thread” between those who voted “Yes” and “No” on Saturday.

“Whose responsibility is it now to, as a nation, drive us forward on this path of reconciliation, which I think broadly people say is still desired or desirable,” he said.

“There are some indigenous leaders stepping back. Now, there are other leaders who’ve, I suppose, come to the fore during this. Is it on their shoulders? "

“Who it is that will emerge and carry this on their shoulders, or whether actually is all of us... I suppose that’s the bit that I’m wondering about today.”

More details revealed by father of Queensland cop killers

The father of the two men who shot at two Queensland police officers has opened up about his son’s gun obsession and how they turned away from religion which eventually led to the horrific murder of the officers.

Constable Rachel McCrow, 29, and Constable Matthew Arnold, 26, were fatally shot at a property in Wieambilla, three hours outside of Brisbane as they carried out a missing persons call.

Nathaniel and Gareth Train were identified as the two brothers who killed the officers, with their father Ron Train revealing how the pair turned to the dark side.

“I’d describe them as two boys who lost their way in life,” he told A Current Affair, refusing to say they are monsters.

Mr Train explained that he raised his sons with Christian beliefs but they turned away from religion before becoming estranged from their parents when they were in their 20s.

“They went down this track, this dark track, which we have no understanding of.”

He explained that the pair soon became obsessed with guns and that it was Gareth who showed more interest in the activity and was more controlling.

“He was very difficult to control, very overpowering.”

But in a surprising turn of events, Mr Train believes that Nathaniel’s marriage to Stacey Train, the third shooter, was up in the air after Gareth married her.

“I just think in the end that he took over that relationship that Nathaniel and Stacey had,” Mr Train continued.

Nathaniel and Stacey’s two children however were also estranged from the family.

Mr Train said he broke down in tears after hearing what his sons had done saying he couldn’t take responsibility for their actions or defend them.

“I cried out to God, because, you know, I’m a believer. I just could not understand,” he said.

“Those decisions were made as adults. I can’t accept responsibility for something in an adult mind.

“There’s no excuse for that. No excuses for their behaviour, and I don’t excuse my boys of their actions at all.

“They’ll stand before God in this world. They can’t be brought to justice in the secular world, but they will before God.”

Constable Matthew Arnold and Constable Rachel McCrow were at a property in the western Darling Downs, about three hours west of Brisbane when they were shot on December 12.

One of the neighbours, Alan Dare, 58, was also shot and killed in the attack.

Constable Arnold and Constable McCrow were joined by two other officers, Constable Keeley Brough and Constable Randall Kirk, both aged 28, at the property.

A six-hour siege ensued, with the officers opening fire about 4.45 pm which saw Constable Arnold and Constable McCrow killed.

Constable Kirk was also wounded while Constable Brough, who was only eight weeks into her new role, managed to escape and raise the alarm.

The pair were finally joined by Special Operations police and helped them shoot dead three suspects, including brothers Nathaniel and Gareth Train, and Stacey Train, after a six hour siege.

Images: Nine News

Cop sent farewell texts to loved ones during shootout

One of the police officers that survived the shootout which killed two of her colleagues has shared her final texts she sent to loved ones in the event she didn’t make it.

Constable Rachel McCrow, 29, and Constable Matthew Arnold, 26, were fatally shot at a property in Wieambilla, three hours outside of Brisbane as they carried out a missing persons call.

Constable Keeley Brough and Constable Randall Kirk, both aged 28, were also at the property with Constable Kirk suffering a gunshot wound.

Nathaniel and Gareth Train were identified as the two brothers who killed the officers, with Stacey Train identified as the third shooter.

Constable Brough thought these would be her final moments and that she would either be shot at or burned alive. So she sent farewell texts to her loved ones.

"Constable Brough grabbed her phone to seek assistance for her colleagues," Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told Parliament House.

"And then, she texted her loved ones, what she imagined would be her final goodbyes.

"Even then, surrounded by danger and death, her first thought was for her fellow officers."

Mr Albanese said it was a “miracle” that Constable Brough survived the terrifying ordeal.

"[Constable Brough] did not know whether she was going to be shot, or she was going to burnt alive," Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers told the ABC on Tuesday.

"'I do know she was sending messages to loved ones saying she almost thought it was her time. What was going through her mind, one cannot comprehend.

"She was in contact with her other colleagues trying to assure them we could get support to go and assist their fallen colleagues at that point in time."

Constable McCrow and Constable Arnold will be farewelled at a funeral service at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre at 10am on December 21.

Details on how the public can offer their condolences will be available in the next few days.

Images: Facebook

"With Honour They Served": Outpouring of emotion after shooting victims identified

The two police officers who were executed at a Queensland rural property have been identified.

Constable Matthew Arnold and Constable Rachel McCrow were at a property in the western Darling Downs, about three hours west of Brisbane when they were shot on December 12.

One of the neighbours, Alan Dare, 58, was also shot and killed in the attack which led to a manhunt for the alleged attackers.

Police services around the country offered their condolences to the families of Constable Arnold and Constable McCrow after their heroic actions.

“It is with a heavy heart we confirm the deaths of Constable Matthew Arnold and Constable Rachel McCrow,” Queensland Police wrote on Facebook.

“Their lives were cut tragically short in the line of duty at Wieambilla yesterday.

“With Honour They Served.”

Police were at the rural property in response to a missing person, who was later identified as former school principal Nathaniel Train.

There were grave concerns for Mr Train who disappeared from Dubbo in the NSW Central West in early December.

The pair were finally joined by Special Operations police and helped them shoot dead three suspects, including brothers Nathaniel and Gareth Train, and a third female, after a six hour siege.

Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll was heartbroken at describing what had happened, following the death of her colleagues.

“This has been incredibly distressing and tragic for everyone, particularly family, officers involved, colleagues, the organisation and the community,” she said.

“As you would appreciate. It is an extremely emotional and challenging time for the Queensland Police Service. Losing one of our own has a profound impact on every single officer and their families. To lose two officers in one incident is absolutely devastating.

“This event is the largest loss of police life we have suffered in a single incident in many years.

“I want to pay tribute to the two other officers who attended....they bravely did what they could to save their colleagues in the most horrendous circumstances. Their bravery was beyond belief.

“Thank you also to the specialist police and other first stand-of-responders who were involved in the dangerous confrontation for many hours last night. Matthew and Rachel were highly respected and much loved members of the Queensland Police Service.

“They were both committed and courageous young people who had a passion for policing and for serving their community.

“Both are under 30 years of age. Both had wonderful careers and lives ahead of them.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also offered his condolences to the fallen officers.

“Terrible scenes in Wieambilla and a heartbreaking day for the families and friends of the Queensland Police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty,” he wrote on Twitter.

“My condolences to all who are grieving tonight – Australia mourns with you.”

Images: Facebook

West Side Story actress snubbed from Oscars

West Side Story actress Rachel Zegler claims she was not invited to the 2022 Oscars, despite the film receiving seven nominations.

When a fan commented on Rachel's Instagram expressing their excitement over seeing the actress's Academy Award outfit, the breakout actress replied, “I’m not invited, so sweatpants and my boyfriend’s flannel.”

Rachel's followers immediately jumped to her defence with messages of shock and surprise, considering the film she is starring in received a Best Picture nomination.

“Breaks my heart. You were the best part of that movie. Surely Steven Spielberg could do something about this,” one fan wrote, referencing the film’s legendary director, who is also nominated.

“Step up to the mic? How’s the leading actress of a movie that’s up for seven Academy Awards not invited? How does that make any sense?” another commented.

After the influx of confused comments, 20-year-old Rachel said she didn't understand the snub either, but she would still be cheering on the musical from home.

“IDK y’all I have tried it all but it doesn’t seem to be happening,” she wrote in a second comment. “I will root for West Side Story from my couch and be proud of the work we so tirelessly did three years ago.”

The young actress has already won a Golden Globe award for her portrayal of Maria Vasquez this award season, stumping movie fans even more.

Despite the outrage, she also thanked her fans for their shock over the apparent snub, saying, “I hope some last minute miracle occurs and I can celebrate our film in person but hey, that’s how it goes sometimes, I guess.”

“I’m disappointed, too. But that’s OK. So proud of our movie.”

"What is going on?": The Project host slams Sydney lockdown

Host of The Project Rachel Corbett has made the case that Sydneysiders would have preferred entering a stricter lockdown earlier to reduce the need for extended lockdowns.

Wednesday night’s episode saw the hosts discuss NSW Premier Gladys Berijiklian’s decision to extend Sydney’s lockdown by one week, in an announcement which upset some but hasn’t surprised many.

“Now that you’re living through this lockdown, I’m going to make you speak for everyone in Sydney. Do you think Sydneysiders would like to see something stricter now?” Waleed Aly asked Corbett.

“I can only speak for myself, but I’ve always felt a bit on the wrong side of these people that are being spoken to,” she said.

“I feel like we’re being treated like delicate flowers who couldn’t possibly deal with a lockdown when, in reality, we don’t want to go into a lockdown that continually gets extended because we’re hemming and hawing about where we should be.

“I think everybody understands we’re in the middle of a pandemic.

“If something goes wrong, shut us the hell down and get us back to normal as soon as you possibly can. I don’t think there’s anything unreasonable in that.

“I’ve always been a bit surprised at this hesitation about being very black-and-white in Sydney, because I get there’s pushback, but you have to take the pushback to get a better result.”

Corbett’s answer came after they welcomed professor Billy Bowtell, a strategic health policy advisor at UNSW, onto the show.

The panellists mentioned comments from NSW Health Minister Brad Hazard, who conceded that the state may have to learn to live with the Delta variant of COVID-19 currently circulating if residents don’t listen to current medical advice.

Mr Bowtell said the message was “an enormous threat” that could confuse the general public.

With the NSW Premier making it clear the goal for locking down the state was to reach zero cases, Mr Bowtell explained that these conflicting statements from both Mr Hazard and Treasurer Josh Frydenberg could confuse the general public.

“It really is the most extraordinary thing that the Minister for Health and Treasurer could say,” Mr Bowtell said.

“I think people in NSW have every right to say, ‘What is going on? What is the objective of this lockdown?’ And to conjure threats that say, ‘If you don’t do what we say, we’ll just let Covid run…’ I mean, have we really come to this?

“I fully support the Premier and the Chief Medical Officer in saying the objective of this is zero Covid. If the Minister for Health and Treasurer have a different idea, then let them say it out loud and bring forth the evidence.”

Image: Channel 10

Waleed Aly's heated COVID-19 debate cut short

The Project got very heated during a debate on COVID-19 in Tuesday night’s episode.

Producers cut off Waleed Aly while he was in the middle of a discussion with co-host Rachel Corbett about the vaccine.

Aly and Corbett got into a discussion about how far the “no jab no play” idea would go, as there is a large percentage of Australians not willing to get the vaccine.

“This is such a good idea for travel,” Corbett said.

“I don’t mind if it becomes something for everyday life. If you have to have the little tick in your passport to go to work.

“If you can’t have it, then you can still go into work because we don’t need to be 100% vaccinated but we need to be decent percentage.

“Some people might not be able to get the vaccination. The idea we can’t go into work if we haven’t got vaccinated, we’re in a pandemic.”

Aly disagreed, saying: “Hang on. 5 minutes with author Rachel Givney

In 5 minutes with author, Over60 asks book writers about their literary habits and preferences. Next in this series is Rachel Givney, a writer and filmmaker based in Melbourne. She has written and edited scripts for television shows such as Offspring, The Warriors, Rescue: Special Ops, The Young Doctors and All Saints. Her debut novel Jane In Love is out now.

Over60 spoke to Givney about Jane Austen, discipline, and the enemies-to-lovers trope.

Over60: What is your best writing tip?

Rachel Givney: “Don’t get it right, get it written.” Get the first draft written down – it doesn’t matter if it’s terrible, just finish it. The old cliché is true, any art is 1 per cent inspiration, 99 per cent perspiration. Once you have that first draft written, it’s much easier to go back and edit.

After years of screenwriting, you finally wrote your first ever book. How did you approach this novel compared to your other work?

Writing a novel required me to include greater sensory detail, to set the scene for the reader in a way not needed in screenwriting.

For example, a part of the book is set in 1803, where the character Jane travels to London. The polluted Thames would have smelled rotten as the industrial revolution dawned; London’s inhabitants would have churned the streets to mud with their boots, Jane might have expressed shock and horror at the squalid scenes. I described these for the reader, whereas if I were writing a screenplay, I would have left it to the production designer, the director, the actors, to bring it to life through audio-visual choices. With the book I also had greater opportunities for introspection, to describe characters’ thoughts, and express feelings which they keep to themselves.

What book do you think more people should read?

Jane Austen’s Persuasion. Austen wrote it towards the end of her life, to me it feels sadder and quieter than her other more popular works, though it still contains the astute observation of her earlier novels. The moment where the hero, Wentworth, estranged for many years from the heroine, Anne, lifts her into a carriage, is filled with quiet erotic tension, quite striking for an Austen novel. The way he holds her and the way she responds shows neither of them has forgotten what they once had; that real love, while it may lay dormant, never dies…

What was the last book that made you laugh?

Unreliable Memoirs, by Clive James. A hilarious, heartfelt tale of suburbia.

What book do you wish you had written?

Sophie’s Choice by William Styron, I loved this Gothic masterpiece.

How do you deal with writer’s block?

Writing for film and television deadlines for 15 years has taught me good lessons in discipline and routine. On a good day, I rise at 6 or 7 and go for a run around the park. Then I will have breakfast and shower and get to my desk at 9am-ish. I will write for four hours, taking a 15-minute break every hour. Lunch is at 1 to 2pm, then another two hours of writing in the afternoon, stopping at around 4pm. I write whatever is next to be written.

On a bad day, I get to my desk and nothing comes, or it comes out badly, and then I hate everything. And this is the time when I hope I have the discipline to forge on, to “don’t get it right, get it written”.

Which author, deceased or living, would you most like to have dinner with?

Jane Austen! In reading Austen’s letters while researching Jane in Love, I sensed great wit and cleverness, but also sadness. Austen’s an enigma, she wrote around 3000 letters in her life, upon her death, her sister Cassandra burnt all but 161 of them. I’d love to hear her talk about her writing, but only if she wanted to, I wouldn’t want to pry. If she didn’t want to talk about that I’d ask her if she had a good recipe for elderflower wine, I believe she liked making it!

What trope can’t you help but love?

I love the website tvtropes.org! My favourite trope is any romance between two seeming enemies who are forced to spend time together, where hatred changes to respect, and respect turns to love, like Jamie Lannister and Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones.

Heartbreak for Rachel Hunter

The mother of Kiwi supermodel Rachel Hunter has died.

Hunter, 47, posted the news of Janeen Phillips' death online, writing: "The beauty that surrounded that moment was a moment only she could have created.

"Yes, there was so much pain in her last 18 months; but we will never forget the force of beauty, fire, protectiveness, empathy, strength, and of course the realm of magic that exists in and around her."

Phillips had been suffering from cancer.

Hunter had charted her mother's final weeks online, including one post about how she and son Liam were sleeping on the floor of the hospital bedroom to be with her. "Liam & I sleep here at night, as many have before to be with their sick loved ones, while the rest of the family gets rest for what the next day might bring," she wrote. "The night calls with Renee to keep her updated on Mums condition. Experiencing the care from the network of nurses & doctors. It's a time to process the grief. An incredibly special time to nurture, listen, love and devote to Mum."

Among the hundreds commenting on Hunter's Facebook page was broadcaster Kerre McIvor, who wrote: "The way you were all able to be together in death defines what it means to have a successful life. Nothing matters, except love and family, and for your beautiful mother to have the people who mattered most with her while she went through this stage will have strengthened and sustained her just as it will have strengthened and sustained you all. Much love xxx"

First appeared on Stuff.co.nz.
